Paul Robinson: Best I've seen Rodrigo play for Leeds United after second goal of season v Norwich

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.

Paul Robinson is delighted to see Rodrigo continuing to perform well for Leeds United after the forward scored in the 2-1 win at Norwich on Sunday.

Although Rodrigo’s second Premier League goal of the season was mainly a result of a goalkeeping mishap by Tim Krul, the 30-year-old Spaniard’s performances as of late have pleased Robinson.

Raphinha has been playing in behind Rodrigo lately and Robinson feels that could be one of the reasons why his form has improved.

While the ex-goalkeeper also feels Leeds have some way to go to back to their best with several players being forced to play out of their preferred positions amid an injury crisis.

“I thought Kalvin Phillips was excellent again for Leeds but I do think they miss Luke Ayling,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“Jamie Shackleton’s done okay when he’s played in there but he’s not a natural right-back. They’ve really missed the two full-backs with Shackleton and [Stuart] Dallas having to play there as makeshift full-backs.

“They’ve got three big players to come back into the side.

“They struggle without Patrick Bamford. I think it was the best I’ve seen Rodrigo play off the back of a run of a few games with Raphinha behind him.”

Many fans feel Rodrigo has struggled since joining Leed in what was then a club-record £27million deal from Valencia.

Last year, The Times reported that Rodrigo had agreed a £100,000-a-week deal at Elland Road but since his move to the club, the Spain international has scored just nine goals and supplied only two assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Rodrigo now has two goals in two league games this season. One was a penalty versus Wolves before he made the most of Krul’s disastrous goalkeeping at Carrow Road on Sunday.
