We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Liam Cooper was “outstanding” for Leeds against Arsenal on Sunday, and that he and Cooper looked like a real partnership for the first time this season.

He said Cooper was his man of the match and also made mention of Elliot Metcalfe, a young Leeds fan who was made virtual mascot for the game at Elland Road.

Elliot is fighting cancer and he was Zoomed into an iPad that Cooper carried out onto the pitch.

Elliot and his family were shown on the big screen ahead of the game, too.

Robinson said this was “outstanding” from Leeds and Cooper and a “real touch of class from the club”.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I thought Leeds played well all round. It wasn’t the end result they would have wanted after dominating the game but after two 4-1 defeats, it was a decent result.

“You’ve got to be pleased with the defence, too. Keeping a clean sheet was really important after conceding eight in two games before that.

“I thought Robin Koch and Liam Cooper were outstanding. They weren’t overly troubled but they were dealing with truly world-class players. Cooper was my man of the match.

“The best thing was, for the first time this season they looked like a partnership, a real pairing, and I thought they were outstanding.

“Before the game, they did the virtual mascot on the iPad. I thought that was outstanding, too.

“The young Leeds fan was supposed to be ballboy for the match but obviously couldn’t be there because of Covid.

“Cooper carried the iPad down onto the pitch. I thought that was outstanding from Leeds, a real touch of class from the club.”

Leeds should have won the game against Arsenal – and would have but for the woodwork, which they hit on multiple occasions.

Keeping a clean sheet against Arsenal will give the side a boost going into the next Premier League game against Everton, on Saturday.
