We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that Jean-Kevin Augustin could prove to be a “really key player” for Leeds between now and the end of the season.
Augustin is still waiting for his first start at the club after signing on an initial loan in January.
He looked overweight and sluggish when he arrived and went down with a hamstring injury before the enforced break.
However, since then he’s been putting the hours in and has undergone a physical transformation that has impressed fans and Leeds.
Angus Kinnear said he was expecting Augustin to play a “critical” part in the season run-in and, more recently, Football Insider said the Leeds coaches are impressed with him and expect him to make a “big impact” in the season run-in.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Augustin has had a difficult start at Leeds. He came in, he wasn’t match fit, I think Bielsa knew that.
“On top of that, you’ve got to be Bielsa-fit and he wasn’t even match fit.
“This break has been absolutely ideal for him, it’s given him a chance to focus, it’s given the staff and manager a chance to develop a program for him that will get him to the level they want from him.
“He could be a really key player for Leeds between now and the end of the season if he can hit the ground running.
“The physical shape he is in now, the noises coming out of the club, he’s an undoubted talent, look at the clubs he’s been at… You don’t play for those clubs and for your country at the level he has if you’re not a talented player.
“He could really prove to be a key player for Leeds between now and the end of the season.”
There’s plenty for Leeds fans to be excited about between now and the end of the season and Augustin is one of them.
Unless Patrick Bamford is injured, he’s very unlikely to start the first game back.
But it does sound as if he’ll get a chance to prove that Big Kev V2.0 is altogether more efficient than the first iteration.
