New myth busted at Leeds United after sales update – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has busted down “myths” that Leeds United will profit from selling thousands of their shirts this summer, even after relegation to the Championship.

The Daily Mail shared that the Whites will sell over 300,000 shirts this summer, which is sixth in the entire country, but they won’t directly profit from that.

The finance expert admitted it will be Adidas who take the windfall, after paying Leeds a fee to produce their kits for another season at Elland Road.

“We need to bust down a few myths here linking to shirt sales,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“It’s not actually the club that makes the money off those as the club has already signed a deal with the shirt provider, it’s the provider that gets the proceeds from any shirt sales unless you’ve got a deal structured in negotiations to say you’ll take a percentage.

Even some of the biggest clubs only have that at around 5% of the value of the shirt, so I don’t know the ins and outs for Leeds, but one thing that is always relevant is that the club don’t take the money from the shirt sale.

There are wider benefits to selling shirts like exposure around the world and if you’re selling lots of shirts then the manufacturer wants to renew that deal, but it’s not the clubs that benefit directly from that.”
