Narrative may flip at Leeds United as £915million development emerges – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.

Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United could find themselves handing money out rather than receiving it in a new deal between the Premier League and the EFL.

Sky News has reported that the New Deal which is worth up to £915million is set to be put to vote in November, but may not come into force while the Whites are in the second tier.

If Leeds were promoted this season back to the Premier League, the finance expert admitted that the narrative could flip with money being handed out, rather than being received.

“You have that situation at Leeds, if you look at the deal and what’s on the table with the uplift at the Championship clubs,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“That is obviously for clubs not in receipt of parachute payments and clubs that are in the Championship and not the Premier League.

If you look at Leeds United now, they’re in receipt of parachute payments, they will be for another two years and if they do get promoted, it becomes a non-argument as you’re back in the Premier League and you’ve got access to the TV money.

So, the narrative flips in that regard, it’s then money Leeds would effectively be giving as part of their membership with the Premier League back down to the football league.

At this stage, and we know that any deal, even if it does get agreed is a couple of years away from Championship clubs really benefitting from that from a revenue perspective, it’s probably not something that is not as much of a concern to Leeds right now.”
