Middlesbrough ready Joel Piroe approach as Leeds United preference shared
Middlesbrough are keen on signing Joel Piroe, MOT Leeds News understands.
With the January transfer window now open and Leeds expected to do some business, plenty of players have already been linked with a move to Elland Road.
However, to accommodate those arrivals, the Whites may have to offload some of the players who haven’t had as much gametime in the Premier League.
Piroe is one who fits that bill, with several Championship clubs showing an interest.
Leeds may be open to Joel Piroe exit
Daniel Farke has praised what Piroe can offer to Leeds this season, and yet the Dutchman has been afforded just 200 minutes of Premier League football across nine appearances.
That lack of action has started to cast a shadow of doubt over his future at Elland Road, and MOT Leeds News understands that the Whites would be willing to sanction his loan exit, but only if they are able to recruit another striker.
Middlesbrough are one of several Championship clubs said to have expressed an interest in Piroe, who scored 19 goals in 48 appearances for Leeds in the second-tier season.
As for who could replace him at Elland Road, Taty Castellanos was linked with Leeds, but a move to West Ham seems to be edging closer to completion.
Terem Moffi and Haji Wright have also been mooted as potential targets should a move for Piroe materialise in the coming weeks.
What is Piroe’s contract situation at Leeds?
Once this campaign is all said and done, Piroe will have just one year left on his Elland Road contract, having signed a four-year deal when he signed back in 2023.
Unless something drastic were to happen, it’s likely that the Whites look to move him on permanently in the summer, given the fact that it will be their last chance to recoup a fairly significant fee for him.
His lack of experience in the Premier League may mean that a move abroad would be more feasible.
However, once again, any exit for the Dutchman is expected to hinge on incomings, with Leeds yet to push forward with any real interest.
