Max Wober departure inevitable despite being ‘one of the successes’ of a ‘leaking’ Leeds United defence

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Max Wober will be missed at Leeds United following their relegation as he was one of the club’s better performers last season but his departure was to be expected, according to Paul Robinson.

The 25-year-old is edging closer to a loan move to Borussia Monchengladbach [Phil Hay, The Athletic] after moving to Elland Road in January and his stay in west Yorkshire looks set to be brief following Leeds’ relegation.

However, he was one of the few standout performers for the Whites and claimed he wanted to remain with Leeds to fight for immediate promotion [LeedsLive], but the Bundesliga offer proved too much.

Robinson acknowledges that Wober would have been a fine asset in the Championship, but Leeds fans should not be too surprised at seeing the Austrian leave Elland Road.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said: “You have to be realistic. They’re in the Championship, they’ve been relegated and the best players are going to want to leave and other teams are going to come and pay the price for them.

“I think Wober was one of the successes of last year. He came in at a difficult time for the club with the defence leaking goals like it was.

“I think they were a better team when he played and I think he was probably one of the better players in the defence.

“I would personally like to see him stay, I like his versatility and that he plays left back. But because of the struggles that Leeds had, he ended up playing centre-half most of the season, but I think he’s a very good player.

“It’s difficult when you get relegated because you lose your so-called better players and he would be one of the players that would be expected to depart.

“Obviously you don’t stand in players’ way. Leeds understand there’s a relegation and you cut your cloth accordingly.

“You understand where you are and what type of players you can attract if you have better players they are going to move on for a fee.

“That’s, that’s what happens when you get relegated. Wober is one player that I would like to see stay because he was one of the better players last year.”
