‘Major boost’ – Exclusive: Pundit reacts as Leeds chief makes big claim about Augustin

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Leeds will give Jean-Kevin Augustin a chance to prove himself this season.

This comes after Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear said the striker was expected to play a “critical” part in the remaining fixtures of the 19/20 season.

After his comments and footage of a new slim-looking Augustin emerged, Robinson said that having him match fit would be a “huge boost” and the “perfect scenario for Leeds”.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I think Bielsa will give him a chance. Patrick Bamford is playing well and at the moment he’s the number one.

“But it’s great, it’s the perfect scenario as now they have someone who can take Bamford on, if needs be.

“Should Bamford not score in two or three games they’ve got someone in Augustin they can replace him with.

“They’ve got someone who can put pressure on Bamford and possibly inspire him onto a run of goals himself. Or someone who can come in and fire Leeds to the Premier League. It’s a great situation for Leeds and for Leeds fans.

“Having a match-fit Augustin is a major boost, without a doubt. What Bielsa demands of his players, not just in games but at Thorp Arch… He puts demands on players other managers don’t.

“If anyone can get the best out of Augustin it’s him. The players have an undoubted respect for him.”

We’ve been impressed by the footage that Leeds posted of the new slim-look Augustin working out at Thorp Arch.

He’s been working on his sprint mechanics at the Leeds training ground in a bid to impress Bielsa and avoid any recurrence of his hamstring injury.

He appears determined to do what it takes to get himself into the Leeds starting XI.
