Luke Ayling to sign new contract with Leeds United - Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Luke Ayling will sign a new contract to extend his stay at Leeds United, according to Paul Robinson.

Ayling, 30, will soon enter the final year of his deal at Elland Road but he’ll miss the start of the 2022/23 season due to him undergoing surgery on a long-standing knee issue.

Jesse Marsch has already moved to sign a new right-back with Rasmus Kristensen joining the Whites from Red Bull Salzburg earlier in June.

Despite Kristensen’s arrival, Cody Drameh’s return from his loan spell at Cardiff City and Ayling’s injury issue, Robinson maintains that Leeds will extend the right-back’s contract beyond the end of the upcoming season.

When asked about the fact that Ayling’s existing contract expires in 2023, Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “No, he’s signing. He’s signing for an extra year to extend his contract.

In the last two or three seasons, he’s been one of Leeds’ regular top-performers.

You’re going to have to do well to replace anyone like that and you give them another two or three-year deal.

You give him a chance to recover from his injury because you’re going to need him with the type of budget Leeds have in the Premier League.

They’re not going to get better than what they’ve got in Luke Ayling.

He’s got quality, he can play anywhere across the back-four and for me, he and Stuart Dallas are the most reliable, dependable players Leeds have got.

He’s a leader on the field and a voice.

He was a man among boys at times this season when they struggled and he’s so versatile.

He’s almost irreplaceable and you give him a new contract regardless of what length it is.”

Ayling played 28 times for Leeds in the 2021/22 season but missed the final three games of the campaign due to a red card he picked up away at Arsenal.

Since joining the Whites in August 2016, Ayling has played 220 times in all competitions for the Yorkshire giants.
