Luke Ayling to quit Leeds United as Sky Sports pundit shares message to Jesse Marsch

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Leeds United are in danger of Luke Ayling quitting Elland Road over a lack of game time, according to Paul Robinson.

Ayling, 31, has had to overcome injury difficulties this season and has also seen his starting right-back role taken by summer signing Rasmus Kristensen.

It means that the former Arsenal and Bristol City right-back has started just once in the Premier League this season.

Ayling might not expect to start too many games once the Premier League restarts next week too as Kristensen, 25, started Tuesday night’s friendly defeat to Monaco at right-back while ‘Bill’ started as a centre-back.

Robinson suggests Ayling’s spell as a Leeds player could soon be coming to an end.

His contract is up in the summer and there’s hardly been any noise about a new deal being offered.

However, the former Leeds goalkeeper believes it would be a mistake for the Whites to let go of a player with such seniority in the side.

“Ayling has to come in and he has to play because you’re running the risk of losing him at the moment,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

He’s not playing football, he’s not getting close to the starting 11 and I don’t think Leeds can afford to lose a player of his quality.”

Ayling joined Leeds in August 2016 and has since played 228 times for the Yorkshire club in all competitions.

He’s played eight times this season, wearing the captain’s armband in the 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves in November while the other appearances have mostly been as a substitute in the league.

Ayling isn’t the only promotion-winning, senior player who could be on his way out of Elland Road in 2023 with Mateusz Klich widely reported to be in talks over a move to DC United [MLS Soccer].
