Liam Cooper in talks over new Leeds United contract at Elland Road – insider

Paul Robinson is thrilled to see the “fantastic” news that Liam Cooper has been offered a new deal at Leeds United.

According to Beren Cross [27 June], the 32-year-old’s departure is not a definite outcome this summer despite his contract expiring at the end of last month.

However, the uncertainty over his Elland Road future has prompted interest from several Championship sides, with the Lancashire Telegraph reporting [12 July] that he is willing to take a pay cut to join Blackburn Rovers.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I think Liam Cooper is in talks to extend his stay at Elland Road, at least I hope he is. Looking at the squad, whether Max Wober comes back into the side or not, he’s got a lot of making up to do.

“He’s one of the ones who is expected to stay, but the squad is going to be reshaped. From Cooper’s point of view, it’s about whether he wants to play football on a regular basis because he doesn’t under Daniel Farke.

“He’s at a stage of his career where he’s very happy, settled and willing to do that. At the moment, if it’s gone on this long, we’re led to believe he’s in talks to extend his stay at Elland Road, which is fantastic news.”

Cooper made just eight Championship starts last season, with Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu partnering up in defence, even keeping Pascal Struijk out of the starting XI.

The central defender has earned the right to make a decision on his future after 284 appearances for the Whites since arriving from Chesterfield in 2014, serving the club for 10 years.

Of course, there will be a lot of emotion if the Scot decides to leave Elland Road this summer, but Robinson believes there is still light at the end of the tunnel.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been told to sign an “out-and-out” right-back amid interest in Montpellier defender Falaye Sacko.
