Leeds United wonder Illan Meslier will be attracting Champions League clubs in no time - Paul Robinson

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson has insisted that Leeds United stopper Illan Meslier will be attracting interest from Champions League clubs in a matter of no time.

The ex-Whites stopper admitted that the French wonder is right to stay at Elland Road for now and keep the number one spot, but believes he has no real competition at the club.

It comes after Meslier pulled off a magical double save against Aston Villa in one of the highlights of the pre-season tour of Australia over the past week.

“He’s a fantastic talent and you forget how young he is,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“To be trusted like he was by Marcelo Bielsa, who has a fantastic eye for a player, he’s going to be a top goalkeeper. I’ve got no doubt that he will move on and play Champions League football at some point of his career.

“It’s a wise decision to stay at Leeds and play as their number one, if they have a similar season to last season though, they will struggle to keep hold of him. If he plays the way he does, there will be big clubs around Europe come looking at him.

“For me, he’s not challenged at Leeds, there’s no one good enough in the goalkeeper department to challenge him, he’s got no experience keeper behind him.”

One to Watch.

This isn’t exactly what we all want, but soon it may be hard to ignore.

Meslier has signed a long-term deal at Elland Road so his future is secure in that sense, and if interest does start to peak, he will command a lot of money.

There have already been links to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, with the National suggesting a move was being readied back in 2021, although that never materialised.

Robinson will know a quality keeper when he sees one, and that is everything that his double save against Philippe Coutinho was – it still looks impossible now.

Football is a business at the end of the day, let’s just enjoy Illan while he is still here.
