Leeds United wary of fines and bad PR after Millwall collaboration – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United will have been wary of fines and negative PR ahead of their Championship clash against Millwall.

In the lead-up to the famously troublesome fixture, both clubs collaborated to release a video warning fans of their behaviour and the possible consequences.

The finance expert admitted that bad PR, which seems to have been avoided, could have a negative effect on future sponsorships and broadcasting deals for the club.

“Absolutely,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“The animosity behind that fixture and one that on paper, where fans always look to light the touch paper and that absolutely shouldn’t be happening in this day and age.

We know it still and that is always there, so two things, one, you have the financial aspect and the threat of a fine.

It may not be a huge amount in the grand scheme of things for the turnover of Leeds United, but it’s still a significant amount of money that you don’t want to pay out if you can afford not to.

Secondly, the PR side of that, the bad press and publicity, we know that these things are posted far and wide on social media when something kicks off and the reputational damage that can do, which can then have a knock-on effect on finances as you’re looking at the perception to sponsors and broadcasters.

There is a financial aspect running through this, and it’s probably the wider PR angle that the clubs were concerned with.”
