Leeds United twice as likely to get promoted to Premier League – Finance Expert

Dan Plumley has insisted that parachute payments are a massive help to relegated teams after Leeds United continued their fine form against Bristol City.

The finance expert shared that teams are twice as likely to earn promotion back to the Premier League in receipt of those payments, and they can add on an average of up to eight points in a season.

It comes after Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer all admitted it was a “huge” advantage with Southampton and Leicester also at the top.

“I’ve been involved in a number of pieces of work on this over the years and all the way back to the mid-2000s,” the football finance expert exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“What we’ve found over that time period is if you look at it statistically, a team that has parachute payments is twice as likely to get promoted back to the Premier League than those that don’t.

Also, they are twice less likely to get relegated again down to League One, so we know in some of that work when we looked that from a points-specific point of view based on the time period, it can also lead to an extra five to eight points in any given season.

When you look at those metrics, it’s quite clear where the problem is with parachute payments, the problems it creates for the Championship, they are great if you are in receipt of those, of course, in the case of Leeds United, but certainly given that volume of work over time.

What the numbers say, it’s no surprise that you look at the top of the Championship table and Leeds, Southampton and Leicester occupy three of the top four spots.”

Huge advantage for Leeds United?

Parachute payments may be an advantage for the likes of Leeds, but they don’t cover up the fact that half of the squad at Elland Road was ripped apart in the opening month.

Daniel Farke has had to claw back those above his side since September, and he has done that superbly, finally hitting the top two, albeit temporarily on Friday.

It was a great win for Leeds, but they will not be stopping there.
