‘Massive’ Leeds United verdict shared as Tottenham ace Ben Davies linked with January transfer to Elland Road

We’re delighted to welcome EFL expert and former striker Don Goodman as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Elland Road.

Don Goodman says Leeds United have the stature to be able to attract a player like Tottenham defender Ben Davies late in the January transfer window.

The Athletic reporter Phil Hay suggested last week that Davies is a target for Leeds, even if the deal looked “far-fetched” at that stage.

Davies has spent 12 seasons in the Premier League with Swansea City and then Spurs, making 222 appearances in the competition.

Speaking on The Square Ball podcast [19 January, 11m 10s], Hay stated that Tottenham’s defensive business this month could force Davies out.

Having best friend Joe Rodon and fellow Wales colleagues Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James in the dressing room could also help Leeds’ cause.

While a move for Davies this month still seems improbable, Goodman insists Leeds are certainly capable of pulling off a deal of this magnitude.

“Leeds United is a huge, huge football club – always has been and always will be,” Goodman told MOT Leeds News.

“When they were out of the Premier League for all those years, to then get back in was massive but it was a shame they couldn’t stay there.

“Davies is a seasoned and experienced player, and I do think the name Leeds United would be a massive reason why they would be able to attract someone like him if that is indeed the case.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke looking annoyed

“Leeds are in a decent place right now and are a little unlucky in that this top four is as strong as any top four as I can remember.

“It usually takes two points a game on average to get promoted, but it might take even more than that this year.

“I think 89 points over the last 10 years has been enough, but I don’t think it will be this year for automatic promotion to be honest with you.”

In other Leeds United news, Daniel Farke is potentially facing an unwelcome situation at Elland Road following a £5million update shared by Phil Hay.
