Leeds United transfer news as Charlie Crew tipped for Elland Road exit in summer window

Charlie Crew should be loaned out by Leeds United ahead of next season if they are promoted to the Premier League, according to Paul Robinson.

The Wales age-grade international appeared on the substitutes’ bench for Leeds in their recent Championship games with Watford and Hull City, prior to sustaining an injury.

While Crew has yet to make a senior appearance, Farke recently hailed the youngster as a “talent full of potential” and suggested he would not be afraid to field him if needed.

However, minutes will be even harder to come by should the Whites be playing in the top flight next season, meaning an Elland Road exit – albeit temporarily – makes sense.

“If Leeds are in the Premier League next season then a loan move would be sensible to get him game time,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“He’s still very young but the manager is not afraid to give young players an opportunity – look at Archie Gray.

“With players like that, Farke’s going to use tried and tested between now and the end of season.

“It will be difficult for a youngster to break through, but the manager has showed faith in him and may continue putting him on the bench.”

Who is Leeds United youngster Charlie Crew?

Crew’s name would not have been familiar with many Leeds fans just a few weeks ago, but the fact he has been propelled into the first-team squad is telling.

A number of injuries to first-team players did force Farke’s hand somewhat, but he still trusted Crew enough to pick him in the matchday squad for a couple of key matches.

The 17-year-old has already trained with the Leeds and Wales senior squads, despite his tender age, and he will undoubtedly be a regular for both one day.

Crew arrived at Thorp Arch in 2022 and impressed in his first year with the Under-18s and Under-21s, so much so that he was handed a professional contract last summer.

If Leeds are to remain in the Championship beyond this season, the midfielder may get regular appearances next term, much like Gray has this season.

The better option, though, is surely to send him out to a League One club and develop elsewhere at senior level, before then coming back to Elland Road ready to challenge for a first-team spot.

Whichever route Leeds go down, the future is certainly bright for this young gem.
