Leeds United told to sign right-back amid Montpellier defender Falaye Sacko update

Paul Robinson has admitted the right-back position at Leeds United needs addressing but believes that Montpellier’s Falaye Sacko may not be the right option.

According to Africa Foot [6 July], Leeds are eyeing the Mali full-back Sacko as a replacement for Archie Gray following the youngster’s transfer to Tottenham.

It is understood that the 29-year-old, who has been performing well in Ligue 1 in recent seasons, is extremely versatile and possesses the ability to play anywhere across the backline.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “The right-back area is a must-deal for Leeds. Luke Ayling has gone to Middlesbrough, having left halfway through last season, Archie Gray spent the second half of the season at right-back, and Jamie Shackleton has left as well.

“That’s an area where there are few options. I don’t see an issue with signing an out-and-out right-back, but Sacko can play either side so the versatility would be appealing. An out-and-out right-back is what the team needs this summer.”

Leeds United to target right-back signing as Falaye Sacko snubbed

Robinson raises a very good point about the potential signing of Sacko. While the 29-year-old is capable of playing on either flank or at centre-back, Daniel Farke is much more likely to want a player who is completely focused on mastering one position.

Leeds are extremely stretched at right-back, with Ayling, Gray and Shackleton all departing the club this summer, while Junior Firpo and Sam Byram occupy the opposite flank.

Gray was one of the most important players for the Whites last term, even despite playing out of position for the majority of the campaign, showing just how much of Leeds’ play went through the right-hand side.

Sacko is not as attacking as many Leeds fans would be expecting from a full-back signing, having only scored one goal for Montpellier in two seasons with the French club.

While the right-back spot must be addressed this summer, the Whites may have to wait a little longer until a better suitor for the position.
