Leeds United told to secure new Illan Meslier contract after Jesse Marsch reveal - Sky pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has urged Leeds United to get Illan Meslier tied down to a new contract amid speculation surrounding his future in West Yorkshire.
On Friday morning (6 May), The Telegraph reported that a number of top players could leave Leeds in the summer if they’re relegated from the Premier League and 22-year-old goalkeeper Meslier was named.
Meslier, despite his tender age in goalkeeping terms, has proven himself to be of top-flight quality and has been linked with Barcelona [Mundo Deportivo].
As quoted by LeedsLive on 28 April, Jesse Marsch said that he wanted to keep hold of Meslier and ex-Whites goalkeeper Robinson feels that’s the right move.
However, Robinson does add that his former club do need to strengthen their options away from Meslier due to him being the oldest and most experienced at Elland Road despite his age.
“Meslier’s still so young for a goalkeeper,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“He’s vitally important for Leeds because the goalkeeping department isn’t strong.
“If you look at other clubs in the Premier League, you can almost say they carry two number ones.
“When you look around, Leeds’ goalkeeping department is particularly weak.
“Meslier is a top-class goalkeeper and they’ve very lucky they haven’t missed big chunks of this season with injuries or suspensions.
“He is key so they need to keep hold of him and strengthen in that area.
“Leeds need to tie him to a long-term contract and get some competition for him because at the moment, they’ve got no cover for him if he gets injured.”
