Leeds United: Sky Sports pundit reacts with Brenden Aaronson eyed by Daniel Farke for January transfer window return

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …

Brenden Aaronson wouldn’t get into the Leeds United first XI this season but he could be an “asset” to have in the squad if he returns from loan this month, says Paul Robinson.

The American left for Union Berlin in the summer thanks to a dreaded relegation-release clause, but according to Graeme Bailey he is unhappy at the Bundesliga side and Daniel Farke is considering the possibility of bringing him back to Elland Road during the January transfer window [One Leeds Fan Channel, 4 January].

Sky Sports pundit Robinson believes Aaronson was found to be “lightweight” in the Premier League but would be a handy player at Championship level.

And with no obvious number 10 in the squad at Elland Road currently, while the priority in the transfer market looks to certainly be in defence, a return might make sense.

Aaronson has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the German side so far this term, having played 41 for the Whites after his £24.7million move to England [Sky Sports].

Robinson told MOT Leeds News: “It will be interesting to see what the manager’s plans are for him. They obviously let him go out on loan because they felt they didn’t need him this season.

“Whether he didn’t fit with the manager’s plans or whether it was a financial reason, we don’t know why he went out on loan.

“But he’s a decent player at Championship-level I think. He struggled in the Premier League, he was a little bit lightweight and knocked off the ball.

“His work rate you can’t question but the quality and the end product wasn’t there, and there was a reason why he was out on loan.

“Whether the manager sees him as an integral part of the squad going forward, I can’t see him getting into the starting XI.

“You look at the game at Peterborough [in the FA Cup], he made six changes and the players that came in, their attitude and application was absolutely what you’d want.

“It looks like he’s got all the players in the squad playing for him so Aaronson would certainly not be a player that comes back in and goes into the starting XI.

“But to have him in the squad between now and the end of the season, you don’t know what business that the club’s going to do.

“If the loan move where he is isn’t working, whether he comes back or goes out on loan again is one to keep an eye on.

“But as part of the squad he might be an asset to have around.”
