Leeds United: Sky Sports pundit reacts to Charlie Cresswell Elland Road exit update from Phil Hay

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …

Paul Robinson is not surprised that Charlie Cresswell will “want to play football somewhere” whether it is at Leeds United or at another club.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay told The Square Ball on 15 January that with Daniel Farke taking a “hard line” on the young defender it looked like the only outcome was now going to be an Elland Road exit.

Cresswell, 21, is believed to be unhappy with his lack of playing time this season, as is his agent and father, while the manager has apparently taken exception to the youngster’s attitude as a result.

He has played just six times in all competitions this season, having made 30 appearances while on loan at Millwall last term.

Sky Sports pundit Robinson admits that it is important for the “fantastic” centre-back to be playing at this age and that for a player of his quality it is not unreasonable to expect to get games for Leeds United, so if he wants to go it would be unexpected.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News he said: “Listen, we don’t know. We’re not privy to conversations that go on behind the scenes.

“He’s a young player and he’s showed exceptional talent. I think he will play at that level for sure.

“We don’t know what’s gone on with the manager. We’re led to believe in certain media outlets that there may be an issue.

“But if you’re a player it’s important at this stage of his career that he plays.

“I think he’s a fantastic young player, a great young talent, but whether that’s in the immediate future at Leeds or elsewhere on loan is yet to be seen.

“But I think for the player’s development he obviously feels that he should be in and around the squad, which is not out of the question for a player of his quality.

“We don’t know what happens at the training ground between managers and players, but from the player’s side of things you would expect him to want to play football somewhere.”

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay reports that a new agreement at Elland Road is now close.
