Leeds United set for PSR boost after recent 49ers decision at Elland Road

Leeds United will be handed a PSR boost after a £14million update at Elland Road, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Angus Kinnear has revealed that the Whites remain close to the profit and sustainability limit, despite selling big-name stars like Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter this summer [Leeds United SAB, 11 October].

But the 49ers’ decision to redevelop Elland Road and increase its capacity will see the Whites pocket an extra £14million in ticket revenue each season, which Plumley believes could aid Leeds’ financial fair play position.

Of course, with PSR nobody is quite sure what is going to happen with that in the industry,” Plumley exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“That might change but as we’re talking right now if you’ve got extra income, that counts towards the bottom line.

What are the 49ers doing to Leeds United at Elland Road?

“If you’re generating, as I say conservatively and with some assumptions, a circa £14million uplift in matchday tickets alone, then that’s a contribution you can make to the overall revenue which will help with PSR as well.”

As Plumley suggests, it isn’t yet clear what the future of PSR in English football is, but that sort of extra income could only be a good thing for Leeds United and the 49ers in the long run.

The Whites have seen Leicester City find loopholes to navigate the financial fair play rules between the Premier League and the Championship and in expanding Elland Road, they could well have found a way to avoid any potential point deductions.

Of course, the redevelopment at Leeds’ home ground is going to be expensive to complete and take some time to be completed, but in time it will reap plenty of rewards for the football club from a financial standpoint.

Although the 49ers have been criticised for a lot of their decisions off and on the playing field during their time at Elland Road, this feels like a very smart business and footballing call from the Whites’ owners.
