Leeds United ‘ready to be risky’ with new transfers after PSR update – Exclusive

Leeds United will be armed with a substantial amount of money in the transfer window, having secured promotion to the Premier League.

The Elland Road club have raised £120million by issuing new shares to existing investors and will use some of that to spend on players.

Leeds will have to be shrewd with their spending, given Ipswich Town and Southampton both spent around the £100million mark and suffered instant relegation.

Another factor that the Whites must consider is PSR, which could limit the Yorkshire club’s spend.

Leeds United to balance risk with reward in the transfer window

When considering Leeds’ spending over the years, they can only lose an estimated £42million to keep within financial rules.

That means that the Yorkshire outfit can spend, but they will have to be savvy with the business they do and keep a close eye on losses.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley believes that Leeds will still be forceful in the window, but thinks they may also have to sell.

“Leeds are going to have to balance spending with player sales, ultimately,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News when asked if they could spend more than £100million.

“Unless they’re being really risky, because the PSR limit is £61million for them due to the seasons in the Championship.

“They’ll be aggressive and have a go, but I think given that PSR number, it puts a little bit more risk into it, as we saw with Forest a couple of years ago, but of course we now know how that’s played out, so you’ve got to balance that risk and reward.

“Leeds will spend, if we start to see spending around that sort of £100million mark, it’s going to have to come with player sales attached as well.”

Leeds to target Premier League experience

Judging from recent transfer reports, it seems that Daniel Farke’s side will be targeting Premier League experience.

A new goalkeeper is high on the agenda, and Leeds have been linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Nick Pope.

Furthermore, Pope’s colleagues, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson, have also been touted for a move to Elland Road.

Arguably, the most eye-catching transfer could involve a move for Kalvin Phillips, who has been heavily tipped to return to Yorkshire.

It will be intriguing to see who Leeds sell, if they do, and they may need to.
