Leeds United question mark emerges amid ‘Huge’ Sam Byram admission
Leeds United have a hugely important squad player in Sam Byram admits David Norris, who initially doubted him as a youngster.
Norris and Byram were teammates when the latter was coming through back in 2012, with the full-back now in his second spell at Elland Road.
The former Whites midfielder, speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, admits he was unsure how far Byram could progress – he has now started three of the last four games to plug gaps enforced by injury and suspension.
And Norris thinks it is “huge” to have a versatile player like that in Daniel Farke’s squad.
“Sam Byram is an excellent player, he was coming through at Leeds when I was there. He was baby-faced and very slight and I wondered how far he could go, if I’m honest. But he was fit, skilful and had a great football brain,” Norris said.
“There have been question marks over the depth in the squad – I was definitely expecting a few more signings – so to have a fringe player who can fill in and do a job in multiple positions is massively important.
“If he’s going to be needed, that will be a huge benefit that he can fill in wherever Daniel Farke wants him.”
Leeds United working around squad depth issues
Leeds United ended the summer transfer window with the smallest first-team squad in the Championship, though have navigated injury and suspension issues with the reliance on the likes of Byram.
Josuha Guilavogui’s arrival outside of the window last month raised the total number at Daniel Farke’s disposal to 24 players, though the manager is competing with several absences.

Before the past four games of which he has started three, Byram had played only 49 league minutes between August and late October.
