Leeds United problem shared amid reports of summer transfer for Michy Batshuayi
Leeds United would be making a good signing for “proven” striker Michy Batshuayi but not knowing what league they are in next season makes transfer planning difficult, says Paul Robinson.
The Fenerbahce striker, who has previous Premier League experience with Chelsea and Crystal Palace, has been linked with a move to Elland Road this summer.
Turkish outlet Star reported (13 April) that the Turkish giants planned to hand the 30-year-old a new deal but Leeds’ interest has complicated matters.
They added Batshuayi faces a “critical” decision now in the summer but Robinson thinks Leeds could be hindered by the fact they don’t yet know if they will get promoted to the Premier League or be consigned to another season in the Championship.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson said: “You would expect they would go into the market for a striker if they were to go into the Premier League because of Patrick Bamford’s injury record.
“GeorginioRutter, JoelPiroe I think they’ve both done excellently well this season but I think they would need the squad depth.
“Batshuayi’s a good player, proven at that level. But the problem Leeds have got is they’re working on two budgets at the moment as are Ipswich, as are Leicester, as are Southampton.
“You’ve got to make your plans, you’ve got to make your targets, but those teams sitting at the top of the Championship have to work on a Championship budget, a worst-case scenario budget and a Premier League budget.
“So there’s going to be a lot of speculation about players coming in and out of the club but I don’t think until anything is decided in terms of what league you’re in next season can you identify realistic targets because depending on what league you’re in a player you target for the Premier League you’ve got no chance of getting in the Championship.”
Leeds United face tough ask on Michy Batshuayi
The Batshuayi link is quite an interesting one. Yes, he has Premier League experience but he’s also now 30-years-old and will be on big money.
He has played in the Premier League before, which makes him an attractive proposition, but would Leeds be better served looking for a better younger option?

It might all become a moot point anyway if they don’t get promoted, a poor run of form has left their automatic hopes hanging by a thread.
So, right now it feels like a tough one to get over the line because if they remain in the Championship it feels like it would be a complete none starter.
