Leeds United news: Matt Targett to be level above Junior Firpo as £15m transfer speculation emerges - pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson would be happy if Leeds United swiped Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett from under the noses of Newcastle United this summer.
According to a report by 90min on 26 April, Leeds are among the clubs who are keen on signing Targett, 26, after his loan spell ends at Newcastle.
It is, however, understand that the Magpies have a “broad agreement” with Villa to sign the former Southampton left-back permanently in the summer transfer window for £15million.
Leeds signed Junior Firpo from Barcelona last summer in a bid to improve their left-back options.
However, he’s struggled in England with ill-discipline, injuries and poor form.
Stuart Dallas, as a result, has had to play a fair chunk of the season at left-back and Robinson would like to see the Whites sign an improvement on Firpo in order to aid that situation.
The ex-Leeds goalkeeper feels that Newcastle loanee Targett would solve that problem.
“I think the left-back position is an area they need to address,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“Stuart Dallas, for me, is more effective in other positions across the field and you can benefit more from his leadership and experience there. It’s just not worked out for Junior Firpo.
“Whether he comes back next season, hits the ground running and comes back as a different player remains to be seen but this season, his defensive capabilities have been exposed.
“Leeds have conceded far too many goals down the left-hand side, his mistakes have led to goals have been poor and if they are to develop a side, Targett is a player that is at a level who’d improved upon what you’ve got.”
In other Leeds United news, Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips have sent messages to one of their exit-linked teammates.
