Leeds United: Don Goodman makes ‘absolutely massive’ admission after Elland Road events

We’re delighted to welcome EFL expert and former striker Don Goodman as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Elland Road.

Don Goodman believes beating Preston North End with a late penalty could prove “absolutely massive” for Leeds United and their Premier League promotion hopes.

Joel Piroe stepped up to convert a 94th-minute spot-kick in Sunday’s (21 January) Championship clash at Elland Road.

Will Keane had given Preston the lead a little over a minute in, but Daniel James levelled up and then substitute Piroe snatched a winner.

The victory was Leeds’ fourth in a row in all competitions to begin 2024 and ensures they are firmly in the automatic promotion race.

After Ipswich Town’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Monday (22 January), the Whites are five points off second place with 18 games to play.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Goodman said: “It was a massive moment for them.

“You look at Leicester, who have still got a cushion, plus Southampton’s unbeaten run. We know Leeds’ ambition has to be to get into the top two.

“So for them to get those extra two points through that penalty in added time was absolutely massive. They’ve been so good at Elland Road.

“It would have been a real blow to drop two points. It’s just a quest from Leeds to find this consistency, which they are capable of.

“They just had that run of winning one in five – a brilliant performance against Ipswich ironically. They looked average on those occasions.

“Leeds away from home are where the problems have been of late, so it was important to get the penalty and secure those points.”
