Leeds United left ‘annoyed’ after new Premier League PSR developments

Leeds United will have been left “annoyed” by recent PSR developments involving Leicester City, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Foxes appear to have dodged a potential points deduction after the Premier League (3 September) confirmed an independent Appeal Board had upheld their appeal against an alleged PSR breach.

Although the Whites were relegated alongside Leicester, they missed out on promotion to the Foxes last term and Plumley believes the recent decision demonstrates the issues with the current system.

“I think they’ll be a little bit annoyed, to be honest,” Plumley exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“It is a tricky one because these are the kinds of loopholes, workarounds and challenges with the difference in governance and regulation between the leagues.

“While you’ve got a position like that where you have two different sets of reporting mechanisms, clubs are looking to move dates around and clubs that are moving between leagues, these kinds of challenges were always likely to arise at some point.

“Certainly from Leeds United’s point of view given they were in the mix of clubs that got relegated within that time and the talk of legal challenges as well, to see a verdict like this come through when Leicester are not going to get any kind of punishment, I imagine they will be pretty annoyed.

“But again, that’s the reality of the challenge with the regulations themselves. There are always going to be winners and losers in any given scenario and this won’t be the first time that a few clubs feel slightly upset.

“You’ve just got to accept that reality while we’re in a period of flux with the regulations and what it could become in the future.”

Do Leeds United have any PSR concerns at Elland Road?

Daniel Farke’s side will of course feel hard done by. If Leicester have avoided punishment because they weren’t a Premier League side, they should surely be punished for a breach whilst in the Championship.

It feels as though the powers at be are making these profit and sustainability rules up as they go along and while the Foxes deserve credit for finding a loophole, such exploits simply shouldn’t be available.

Hopefully, something will be done to bring all the leagues together under one umbrella when it comes to financial fair play regulations.
