Huge Leeds United transfer admission emerges at Elland Road

Paul Robinson believes that Leeds United will have “no chance” of signing Marius Wolf on a free transfer as a Championship club next season.

According to Florian Plettenberg [20 May], the Whites have already enquired about the Borussia Dortmund full-back, who is set to leave the Bundesliga side upon the expiration of his contract this summer.

With Leeds reportedly owing over £100million in unpaid transfer fees, as per The Daily Mail, the free transfer of Wolf could be an attainable option, but only if they are promoted.

Daniel Farke’s side are set to go head-to-head with Southampton in the Championship play-off final on Sunday 26 May, meeting at Wembley for the vital end-of-season showdown.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “They’re working on two budgets. He is a Premier League player, and they’ve got no chance of signing him if they’re in the Championship.

“I’m not so sure what the FFP and PSR situations look like. We saw the club announce huge losses last time the books came out, especially in the unpaid transfer fees section. So, I think Leeds’ hands will be tied – they won’t make any huge signings.

“If they get into the Premier League, I think the most important one will be Joe Rodon. He’s been excellent this season. Then they build the squad accordingly. I don’t think we’ll see them hugely overspend. There’s still a lot of dead wood out on loan, taking up huge chunks of the wage bill.

“I don’t see those players being integrated back into the squad, apart from Jack Harrison who is more than good enough. But with the way that he left, I don’t know if the door is still open for him.

“There are two sides. If Leeds are in the Championship next season, there will be a mass exodus. If they’re in the Premier League, it’s important to keep hold of the nucleus of the squad and build on it. For me, the squad that they have now is stronger than the one that came down from the Premier League.”

Will Leeds United sign Marius Wolf this summer?

Considering Leeds’ lack of depth in the full-back department, it makes total sense for the club to target an international defender, especially one on a free transfer this summer.

Of course, until the Whites know their fate ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, transfers will be slightly difficult to predict, with Premier League promotion balanced on a knife’s edge.

With only Junior Firpo available at left-back currently, Wolf would be a very sensible addition this season and should be one they attempt to sign even if promotion is not secured on Sunday.
