Leeds United frustration emerges after ‘Debatable’ controversy v Burnley
Paul Robinson believes Leeds United calls for a penalty in the 1-0 defeat to Burnley on Saturday were debatable (14 September).
Without VAR in the Championship, referee James Bell decided not to award a spot-kick as Joe Worrall challenged Manor Solomon from behind.
The decision has been greeted with mixed reactions, with the Elland Road crowd desperate for the penalty to be given, but the calls were not met with the ideal answer.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “It was a debatable one. Some of the ball was taken, but from a Leeds point of view, you want a penalty.
“There’s frustration after the game because, yet again, it’s another game in which Leeds struggled to break down a team that plays a low block. If Leeds go on to win that game 3-1, it’s not an incident that we’re even talking about.”
Should Manor Solomon have won a penalty in Leeds United v Burnley?
Fans are often finding themselves drawn to the Championship, rather than the Premier League, due to the absence of VAR. This means referees are bound to make mistakes.
With this specific incident in mind, fans are going to have differing views, with some praising Bell for his spot-on decision while others have slammed the decision, even after studying the replays.
While a spot-kick certainly would have helped Farke’s side get back into the Championship clash, they cannot hide behind the fact they struggled to break down Scott Parker’s team.
The clash between Leeds and Burnley was seen as a battle between two promotion contenders, who could also be in with a chance of lifting the title, so it was an opportunity to lay down a marker.
Farke’s side have now failed to do that, with five points separating them from West Brom at the top of the league table, and the focus needs to switch to securing points from their next few matches.
