Leeds United follow transfer trend with Crysencio Summerville contract clause

Leeds United selling Crysencio Summerville to West Ham United was indicative of a trend in the transfer market nowadays, according to Dan Plumley.

The Whites confirmed in their announcement of the deal that the Hammers had triggered a clause in the winger’s contract with LeedsLive saying the Hammers had agree to pay in excess of £25million plus add-ons.

LeedsLive also added that Summerville had an exit clause triggered when Leeds were relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season and that it remained active as the Whites failed to return to the Premier League.

Finance expert Plumley, speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, said such clauses are commonplace for teams in Leeds’ situation.

“It’s part of the reason why they’re (clauses) in there in the first place,” he said.

“We know especially with those clubs when they’re in the Premier League at risk of relegation or the other way likely to get promoted or there’s some sort of clause in there saying if you don’t get re-promoted within X amount of years then players are free to speak to other clubs.

“And all those things are emerging now in contracts as they get more detailed.

“It’s absolutely just the way of the market at the minute and even if you don’t have to necessarily sell or it’s not a critical need to sell, if you’re in the Championship and you’ve got those clauses in the contract and a Premier League club comes looking it’s really difficult for that transfer then to not go through.

“And you can see again just another example of just how that works and what the market looks like at the minute.”

Leeds United hands tied in Crysencio Summerville deal

No one could make a legitimate argument that losing the Championship Player of the Year is not a blow and Summerville was excellent for Leeds last season.

But, ultimately, it sounds like the club’s hands were tied in the end by a clause in his contract and there is still plenty of quality in the Whites’ ranks.

And if they can find a good replacement (Jonathan Rowe anyone?) then it certainly is not the end of the world nor is it a fatal blow to their promotion hopes.

It’s all about how savvy Leeds are in the market now and, in fairness, there haven’t been many misses since Daniel Farke came to the club.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been backed to make a transfer decision on an exit-linked defender on one condition.
