Leeds United find ‘new PSR headroom’ after Lukas Nmecha transfer – Exclusive

Leeds United are in a healthy financial position as they prepare for their Premier League return.

The Peacocks have raised fresh investment of about £120million, although it is unlikely that it will all go on players, given PSR constraints at the top.

Leeds have already got the ball rolling on summer signings, with Lukas Nmecha the first man through the Elland Road door.

Now he has been joined by Jaka Bijol, who joined Leeds from Serie A outfit Udinese for around £15million.

Nmecha signing aids Leeds United PSR situation

PSR is causing some Premier League clubs all kinds of problems, but Leeds are not in any financial danger.

So far, the Yorkshire club have only spent money on Bijol, as Nmecha was acquired on a free transfer from VfL Wolfsburg.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley has provided insight on how such deals will affect Leeds’ future business.

“It does give you that little bit more headroom with PSR, doesn’t it?” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“There’s no transfer fee, so you’re basically looking at the wage cost addition to the bottom line.

“On a PSR calculation, any free transfer just gives you a little bit more headroom, so you can see the strategy of dipping into that market where you can, especially if you might find a bit of value with the type of player that you’ve got.

“The PSR calculation will be helped in that regard, given any free transfers that come in.”

Who could follow Nmecha and Bijol to Elland Road?

Leeds have got some of their business done early, but there are going to be several more arrivals in Yorkshire.

A new striker is on the agenda to challenge Joel Piroe, with Beto, Calum Wilson, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all being linked.

Reports state that Leeds have already made contact over a move for Calvert-Lewin, whose contract is set to expire at the end of June.

Elsewhere, the Whites want a new number one in place of Illan Meslier, who suffered some disastrous moments in Leeds’ title-winning season.

Nick Pope is a potential target, although he is said to want to challenge James Trafford for the Newcastle United number one jersey.

Trafford is primed to depart Burnley after news that they are in line to secure a deal for goalkeeper Max Weiss, showing the struggles that face newly-promoted clubs.

With Nmecha through the door on a free, Leeds have plenty in the bank to land more deals this summer.
