Leeds United could risk it all for bigger promotion windfall – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United would earn more windfall from possible promotion if they went through the Championship play-offs.
With the gap to Ipswich and Leicester still quite large, many fans have started looking at the gamble of two legs and Wembley to get back to the Premier League.
The finance expert admitted that clubs would have to take on a very big risk and the potential jeopardy of losing in that shootout, compared to being guaranteed promotion automatically.

“I suppose if you look at it through an extra couple of fixtures, all of them on TV and a Wembley final, you are going to gain more that way,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“It’s just because of the number of games, I guess, from the fan perspective, we know that a day out at Wembley is brilliant.
“The jeopardy is if you can secure promotion that way, the club would rather go up automatically and if you look at the revenue position, we know that Leeds would have lost £60million in revenue from relegation if they go back up at the first time of asking, you can get that back because of parachute payments and the TV money you would get.

“I think it really comes down to how much you really want to risk the sporting jeopardy, fans would love the day out at Wembley and you would get a little extra money through the play-offs, but the reality is the club would prefer automatic and no risk.”
