Leeds United condition to complete Oliver Skipp transfer from Tottenham named

Leeds United need to come up with a “really good” deal to convince Oliver Skipp to reject Premier League overtures and join them in the Championship, David Norris has said.

Skipp was strongly linked with Leeds while current club Tottenham were negotiating for Archie Gray, with Joe Rodon eventually returning to Elland Road on a full-time deal in a separate deal.

The talk of Skipp moving to Daniel Farke’s side has rekindled in recent days (Planet Sport, 15 July) with the club short in the middle of the park having sold both Gray and Glen Kamara.

Former Whites midfielder Norris is unsure whether they can do enough to lure him to West Yorkshire, though.

“My heart says he would take the opportunity if it was offered at such a big club to get them out of the Championship,” Norris exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“But my head says he might rather stay at Spurs or possibly get another Premier League move.

“Unless the deal was really good, overall I can’t see him taking that risk of going to Leeds when there might be Premier League opportunities for him.”

Even after signing Joe Rothwell, Leeds need more midfield cover beyond Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu.

Norris believes there is now every chance Skipp, who is under contract until 2027 at Tottenham, could stay and fight for his place under Ange Postecoglou or may even find another Premier League club.

The Sporting News [17 July] reported this week that Skipp had turned down the chance to come to Leeds, and is likely to be competing with Gray for game time having played fewer than 700 minutes in the top flight last season.

Oliver Skipp had a tough season at Spurs last year

Leicester City – now freshly back in the Premier League – are reportedly in the hunt for Skipp’s services [Yorkshire Evening Post, 17 July] having taken another Spurs midfielder, Harry Winks, last season to good effect.

For now it’s looking like a battle Leeds may have to concede, but no one can tell Skipp there is no opportunity for him to play regular football with a major shot at the Premier League again in 12 months’ time.
