Leeds United chief obsessed with Elland Road plans, talks now needed – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Dan Plumley has admitted that Leeds United plans to improve travel links to the city tie everything together at Elland Road, with Peter Lowy behind the ideas.
The Daily Mail reported on January 3 that Lowy is “obsessed” with the idea of a rail link to the city, and plans to transform the stadium and surrounding areas.
The finance expert admitted that Lowy, described as a significant investor will need to hold bigger conversations with councils and funding bodies before the plans become a reality.
“It ties it all together,” he exclusively MOT Leeds News.
“If you’re looking at expanding the stadium and looking at expanding the wider offer of the stadium in a way to get people there, not just on matchdays, but beyond that, then your wider things of infrastructure and transport links come into it.
“We’ve seen new stadiums built at the elite level where transport is a key part of that function, it’s about how that stadium fits with the wider infrastructure of the city and how accessible that becomes, and a lot of football clubs that have traditionally old stadiums, that have a lot of history attached, they’re not always in the best places nowadays for the transport hub around the city.

“So, it makes sense as part of that bigger picture play that if you think about the whole matchday experience and beyond, one of the things that is a big factor in that is transport links.
“If you can improve those, then that is a no-brainer as well, I guess the challenge with that is that always isn’t just in the club’s remit, that’s part of a bigger conversation with councils, funding bodies, it’s about the city as much as it is about the club.
“You have to play ball with them, whereas the stadium directions are things you can directly control.”
