‘Leeds are good enough already’ – Pundit puts Paul Merson right after derogatory Whites verdict

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that Leeds already have enough strength to survive in the Premier League next season.

He was responding to comments made by Paul Merson in his column for the Daily Star.

The Sky Sports regular said, “It’s Leeds I worry about if they don’t sign a striker. I don’t see how they survive. I don’t see Patrick Bamford scoring the goals [Fulham striker Aleksandar] Mitrovic will.

“If Leeds can get a top-quality forward, they might be OK.”

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News he said, “I don’t think Merson is right.

“You saw how Leeds played in the Championship last season. You saw how they played against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

“I don’t necessarily think that’s the case at all. I think that Leeds are good enough as they are to stay in the Premier League.

“But Paul is right when he says that Leeds need a striker and it’s an area that they’re looking at to strengthen.

“It’s the chances that are created in the Leeds team. If you’ve got someone that can take more of those chances then even better.

“But I think there’s enough quality and strength in that squad to stay in the Premier League even if they didn’t sign anyone else.”

Former Arsenal star Merson must have had a night off when Leeds travelled to the Emirates.

The side, led by Patrick Bamford up top, gave Arsenal a footballing lesson that was reversed in the second half.

You can see the domination that Leeds enjoyed in the first half in this attack momentum graph from SofaScore.

Arsenal might not be the team they used to be, but you wouldn’t find Merson saying they’re in danger of relegation.
