Leeds to spend £100m+ after ‘bullish’ Paraag Marathe transfer reveal – Exclusive

Leeds United are primed to spend over £100million on new signings if they secure promotion to the Premier League this season.

Daniel Farke is on course to lead Leeds back to the Premier League as they sit atop the Championship table with eight games left to play.

With promotion looking likely, Paraag Marathe recently revealed that the Elland Road outfit would push the limits of PSR while complying with the regulations, thus hinting at a spending spree in the summer.

Leeds to push boat out to stay in Premier League

Marathe added that the Leeds ownership is determined to put every pound they earn back into the squad – a statement that Dan Plumley has now described as “bullish”.

The football finance expert believes the Whites chairman made his intentions for the summer clear by saying that, especially with all three teams that earned promotion last term set to drop back down.

However, he stressed the need for the West Yorkshire outfit to continue complying with the PSR as the Premier League has decided to keep it for one more season.

“I think we have to read it as that, it’s a bullish statement, wasn’t it, and there are clear intentions there”, Plumley exclusively told MOT Leeds News when asked if that guarantees a £100million-plus spend.

We perhaps expected them to have to spend, of course. You can see at the minute, the three clubs that went up last season are looking likely to come straight back down. So, Leeds are aware of that as well.

Farke pleased with Marathe claim

We know how tough it is to stay in the Premier League, but that would seem to be a big statement of intent, and if he’s coming out and saying things like that, then you would expect some spending if they were promoted.

And then, of course, you’ve got to look at the bigger regulatory picture. PSR has been agreed by the Premier League for one more season, and then they’ll look to transition into this squad cost rule that UEFA have put forward or a version of.

It’s still there in the background at the minute and Leeds will have to work carefully along those lines, but when your chairman’s coming out and saying something like that, it’s pretty clear that the club will look to invest on the pitch if they get promoted.

Nevertheless, Farke will be pleased with what Marathe said at the FT Business of Football summit in February, as he is now likely to be given a significantly big transfer kitty ahead of next season.

The German tactician, though, still needs to ensure Leeds earn promotion, with Sheffield United sitting level on points with them.
