Keith Hackett: VAR is here to stay despite Adam Forshaw admission on Leeds United squad

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett has admitted that VAR is here to stay after Adam Forshaw shared that most of the Leeds United squad would like to see it scrapped.

The ex-FIFA official joked that most Premier League players would like red cards scrapped, so whether they like it or not, big changes such as that are not coming.

Forshaw admitted in an interview with the Daily Mail that he would get rid as it just leaves the squad infuriated more times than satisfied with the results.

“I think it’s across the Premier League,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“I’ve read this weekend that most Premier League players would like VAR binned, but most players would also like to see red cards binned.

“So, the reality is, look guys, VAR is here to stay and what you’ve got to do is recognise at the elite level that the world is watching you and you’ve got to play within the laws of the game.

“Now, the old question of VAR and how it is operated has been the subject of many debates, we know that VAR systems are not operating as well as it could be.”

It looks as though the only people that the authorities are not listening to, are the players.

They surely should be the main group that is being listened to and with them clearly not behind VAR, it begs the question as to who is?

It is only making officiating worst as they are either trying to prove they are good enough, or not doing enough with the technology to fall back on – it makes no sense.

Hackett is right though, it isn’t going anywhere.
