Keith Hackett: Leeds United and Rodrigo ‘lucky’ not to have second goal v Brentford disallowed
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…
Keith Hackett has insisted that Leeds United were “lucky” not to have their winner disallowed in the huge 2-1 victory over Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
The ex-FIFA official admitted that Rodrigo got away with one as he was stood in an offside position as Jack Harrison smashed home, with the deflection potentially saving him.
Leeds would have stayed in the Premier League without that goal in the end, with Burnley losing to Newcastle in an amazing 24 hours for the Whites.

“I think the reason he wasn’t pulled is because of the deflection,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“I think that’s why it wasn’t [disallowed], but he is in the line of sight, he’s lucky not to be given offside. He was, for me, in the eyeliner of the goalkeeper, and he’s in an offside position.
“So, he’s got away with one.”

Lucky?
We were nervous when the replays came up, and even more when it was confirmed that VAR were checking.
Technology has not been a friend of Leeds all season, but everything was given the green light and then it allowed the celebrations to start in the away end and in West Yorkshire.
David Raya still made a perfectly good attempt for the ball, so he can’t have been too blindsided by Rodrigo in the end as Harrison smashed home.
As Hackett mentions, the deflection off Bryan Mbuemo also helped massively.
Leeds are in the Premier League for another year, they will not care one little bit.
