Keith Hackett: Investigation will be ongoing as Leeds United star Raphinha targeted by laser pen v Aston Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett has insisted that an investigation will be ongoing as Leeds United star Raphinha was targeted by a laser pen against Aston Villa.

The ex-Premier League official labelled the incident as “ridiculous” and that it was very dangerous during the 3-3 draw.

Hackett admitted that he would liked to have seen Raphinha report the incident to the officials after it had happened.

“Football takes this very seriously,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“The security measures inside the ground are substantial, the number of cameras pointing at spectators are probably more than the actual cameras pointing at the players.

“I would have liked that player at that point if he’s recognised he’s got a laser pen pointing at him to have brought that to the attention of the referee. I don’t think players should just accept that this is acceptable in the game.

“I think it’s dangerous, it’s in the minority and rarely happens, but it’s ridiculous it has. I know full well they will be investigating that.”

Ridiculous.

How this is still happening is beyond us.

Raphinha continually kept hitting the first man from corners at Villa Park, and now we potentially have the reason why.

The image was shared by a fan on Twitter, with the laser clearly visible in the still capture below;

With the investigation ongoing, we can likely expect retrospective action.
