Leeds United emotions run high as Junior Firpo verdict delivered

Ian Darke says Junior Firpo should receive a “free pass” after his controversial reaction at full-time between Leeds United and Sunderland on Friday [4 October].

Firpo’s excellent second-half goal appeared to be the winner at the Stadium of Light until his deflection on Alan Browne’s attempted ball into the box diverted past Illan Meslier in the 97th minute.

Jeff Stelling was among those to slam Firpo after he stormed straight down the tunnel, opting not to console Meslier or applaud the travelling fans.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, legendary football commentator Darke said: “Football is a passion play, and feelings run very, very high in moments like that.

“He was probably very upset, especially after his storming run for his goal on the night, and he probably had in his head that he was a match-winner.

“I think in the long run, that [reaction] doesn’t matter much and it’s a bit of a storm in a teacup. In the circumstances, on this occasion, I think you have to give him a free pass and move on.”

Junior Firpo improving relationship with Leeds United fans

The idea that many supporters on social media actually jumped to the defence of Firpo after the Meslier incident is indicative of how their rapport with the Dominican has improved.

Firpo has, during his time at Elland Road, been the subject of more than his share of criticism, ranging from his positional play to his defensive nous.

He is the established first-choice left-back for Daniel Farke – even if, granted, the manager is hardly blessed with options – and he is part of a back line to have kept five clean sheets in the Championship so far.

Firpo, 28, has also added this goal plus two assists to his attacking game this term, and will certainly have one eye on securing his future with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

As for his relationship with Meslier, it will surely be an easy fix and there is little a public uproar could do until the transfer window opens in January regardless, apart from work a potential run of games for Karl Darlow between the sticks.
