Journalist gives Willy Gnonto verdict as Leeds United look to introduce sensation to first-team

Wilfried Gnonto could be an “interesting player” for Leeds to throw in to their first-team as Jesse Marsch’s side struggle for results, according to Alex Barker.

The Whites signed Gnonto on a permanent deal from FC Zurich on deadline day as they looked to bolster their attacking options, but the teenager is yet to appear for the first-team despite them being winless in five games.

And speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, journalist Barker (aka Euro Expert) believes he could make an impact as he suits Marsch’s style well, but tempered expectations because of his age.

“Potentially yeah,” he told MOT Leeds News.

“You’d have to go back to last season to see the kind of impact he had as a 17/18 year old at FC Zurich. He got eight goals in 30 appearances, but he only started nine of those games so he’s averaging a goal in just under every two games.

“He could be an interesting player to throw in, especially if you’re looking for a hungry player which really suits Jesse Marsch’s style with a pressing team.

“Obviously he’s only 18 still so don’t expect too much. Maybe there are some bigger issues for Leeds that they need to sort out, but he could be a fun player to throw into the mix right now.

“It’s an interesting point to bear because I haven’t seen much of Gelhardt but I remember people talking about him last season and Leeds fans were really hyping him up.

“Maybe it’ll be the right push. Luke Shaw had a really good game the other day for Manchester United and maybe that’s because Malacia has been egging him on in the background, so maybe Gnonto and Gelhardt can push each other on for minutes and for goals.”

Gnonto got on the scoresheet for the Leeds Under-21’s side in midweek with the winning goal against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and could potentially make his debut against Arsenal this weekend.
