'I'm really surprised' – Exclusive: Pundit reacts to Athletic lockdown update on Bielsa
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has hailed the genius of Marcelo Bielsa and said he’s surprised that the Leeds manager hasn’t been linked with the country’s biggest jobs.
Robinson was talking after it was revealed by The Athletic that Bielsa had been using lockdown time to task his staff to study “every goal scored from a set-piece situation in Europe’s top five leagues (plus the Championship) this season and identify the most efficient zones for set-piece takers to target.”
It’s yet another brilliant insight into a man who lives and breathes football

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “It just shows his compulsive obsessiveness. Spygate did that too.
“But the way the man works, the way that his mind works, the more you learn about him the more you want to learn about the man himself.
“I’m really surprised that he’s not been linked with top Premier League jobs. His track record is second to none, top players and top managers like Pochettino saying what an outstanding manager he is, and the job he’s done at Leeds.
“It just shows the level of detail he goes into. Most managers on Friday will know nine or 10 of the players they’re going to come up against, and they’ll have a good idea of who’s going to be on set pieces.
“He’s not interested in that. He wants to know the 11 he’s going to be up against, who’s taking what, who’s doing what and who’s doing what where. He doesn’t leave any stone unturned.
“He has a scientific approach and he doesn’t leave it to others. He seems to have to know everything about anything that’s going on. It gives you a huge respect for the man.”
Bielsa has become so big a part of the story at Leeds over the past two years.
It’s a real shame that this season has gone the way it has after all his hard work, and we’re just hoping that the Coronavirus doesn’t get in the way of him taking Leeds back into the promised land.
