Georginio Rutter to stay at Leeds United – but two Elland Road teammates to quit

Don Goodman believes Georginio Rutter is the one attacking player Daniel Farke will not want to see depart Leeds United this summer.

The Whites are expected to say goodbye to a number of key men over the coming months after failing to earn promotion to the Premier League.

Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto continue to be linked with top-flight clubs, while the futures of Joel Piroe and Rutter are also unclear.

While Summerville and Gnonto would likely attract higher transfer fees, Goodman insists Rutter is the one Farke will not want to do without going forward.

Goodman told MOT Leeds News: “I do think Summerville and Gnonto are the two most likely to go. Rutter strikes me as a player who is passionate to take Leeds United back up, having been part of their relegation.

“He’ll potentially want to stay at the club and also improve after a brilliant season that fell away after hernia surgery. But if I’m Daniel Farke and I can keep one of those, I’d want to keep Rutter more than the others.”

How much did Georginio Rutter cost Leeds United?

Rutter had an impressive 2023-24 campaign for Leeds United as he scored seven goals and assisted a further 15.

While Rutter does not catch the eye as much as Summerville, who was rightly named the Championship’s Player of the Season, he has other standout qualities.

It could be argued that it will be more difficult to replace Rutter than Summerville, who many are now expecting to join a Premier League club in the next few weeks.

More than that, though, Leeds quite simply will not get anywhere near the £36million they spent to sign Rutter just 17 months ago [BBC Sport, January 2023], and it therefore makes no sense to take a massive hit this summer.

The best outcome at this point is that Rutter helps fire United back to the Premier League and adds a few extra million back to his price tag in the process.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been told to pay an eight-figure sum to sign a player from one of their Championship rivals.
