‘Football journalism at its worst’ – Exclusive: Robinson blasts potential next Leeds boss report
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson is furious with an “absurd” report which says that Leeds United have earmarked Lee Bowyer as their next manager once Marcelo Bielsa eventually leaves the club.
Bowyer has done a fantastic job at Charlton and a recent report by LeedsLive claims that the “Elland Road hierarchy have tagged him as one to watch when it comes to their next head coach”. It was also reported that Bowyer’s successful spell as a player at Leeds would mean he would have the backing of the supporters.
When asked if he can see Bowyer managing Leeds at some point in the future, ex-goalkeeper Robinson slammed the speculation about who could one day replace Bielsa in charge of the Whites.
“I can’t believe they’re even talking about it,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News. “Bielsa’s done an unbelievable job. That is just football journalism at its worst.
“The man’s done an outstanding job, he’s about to make history and if they go up, they’ll probably put a statue of him outside Elland Road. To be talking about the next manager is absurd.
“Lee is someone I’ve played with and I didn’t expect him to go into football management at all – but I think he’s done an outstanding job at Charlton.”
Bielsa has all the makings of a Leeds United legend.
Even if the Whites do not win promotion while he is in charge, no one will ever forget the way he transformed the club, improved players by leaps and bounds and had supporters loving their club again and packing Elland Road to the rafters.
Bielsa is the best manager that Leeds have had in a long time and it will be a long time before anyone comes into the club who is quite like him.
We can understand why Robinson is unhappy to read about speculation on the next Leeds boss but football journalism is a tough industry to be in right now.
LeedsLive’s story wasn’t intended to talk about the possibility of Bielsa leaving because, as much as we hate to admit it, that day will come in the future at some point. Their story was more about ex-Leeds players who could possibly replace him when that day, unfortunately, comes.
