Finance Expert shares Leeds United windfall twist as new record broken
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United breaking the record for consecutive away ties in the FA Cup will not affect their revenue as much as once thought.
The finance expert admitted that gate receipts are split equally in the competition, meaning only sporting advantage is handed away after the draw against Peterborough made it 13 away trips on the bounce.
Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist labelled the record as “incredible” on talkSPORT, with plenty of games to come before that one comes around in the calendar.

“Not as much as you would think in the FA Cup because of the way they distribute the attendance money,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“Actually, from the third round onwards, the gate receipts are almost equally split so each club gets 45% and the 10% goes into the pool which sorts the prize money out.

“So actually, it can be beneficial, not in the case of Leeds, but if you work off the theory for a lower-league club for example, it can be better financially to be drawn away at a big club because if they sell out, you would take 45% of the pot. It’s an interesting one because people will look at the narrative of who is getting the home draws.
“That has a sporting advantage, but not a financial advantage because they are split.”
