Finance Expert shares if Leeds United ready to spend millions at end of January transfer window
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United are more likely to utilise the loan market than permanent moves before the end of the January transfer window.
The finance expert admitted that was not “unusual” with plenty of other top Championship clubs in the same position with costs needing to be managed.
Djed Spence has returned to Tottenham already this month, with Luke Ayling also joining Middlesbrough on loan, with three spots open to be used at Elland Road.

“That’s not just Leeds United that are in that position,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“That’s a whole host of Championship clubs because they are all jostling in that same market and also looking at the financial considerations.
“So, bringing in a loan signing and opening up a couple of spots in January is often perceived as a lower-risk strategy because you have that issue still there where you’ve had that Premier League revenue for a couple of years but that has now gone away.

“You’ve got parachute payments to offset some of that but you’ve still got to manage your cost accordingly, especially against the profit and sustainability regulations in the Football League as well.
“Yes, there is a directive to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible, but you don’t want to spend a considerable amount of millions trying to do that at the risk of it not coming off.
“I think that’s where you see in the case of Leeds, more loans than transfers in January, but again, that’s not unusual in the market, that’s the case for a lot of Championship clubs.”
