Finance Expert reacts to possible Leeds United termination for Helder Costa

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the “kicker” is both parties agreeing to a mutual termination as Helder Costa still remains at Leeds United.

The possibility was discussed after a summer move failed to materialise, despite both the club and the player wanting to find an exit solution [Adam Pope].

The finance expert admitted that early terminations are becoming more popular in football, but it will be down to the cost-benefit analysis, given that Leeds spent £16million to sign him back in

“I think that’s the kicker is if both parties come to that agreement,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“You’ve got to look how it plays out, there is the next transfer window in January, so you have the risk and reward element, or the cost-benefit analysis to look at in terms of keeping a player on the books that is not in the squad and not going to play.

“Then there is the wage cost versus a deal now that gets all that away from the finances of it, and cuts the deal short.

“It’s the difference then between that cost and the cost of keeping the player, of course, there is no definite take whether he goes in January, so you have the same problem.

“Nowadays, we’re seeing these mutual terminations more and more, but it has to be an agreement made by all parties.”
