Finance Expert reacts to Leeds United legal news with compensation mooted

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has mooted potential compensation for Leeds United as they watch the FFP hearing developments at Everton after threatening legal action.

It has been shared that the Toffees hearing has been set for October, with the Championship season surely starting to take shape at that point.

The finance expert admitted any legal action will likely come down to monetary value with the current takeover and the new season taking priority at Elland Road.

“I think they have to focus on the football first and foremost,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“The takeover is also central to that, so the club itself has a lot going on. This will be in the background for sure, and it will drag, we always expected it to drag.

You are looking around likely things to happen there and what some of the clubs have done by pressing that forward, you’re almost into the realms of compensation packages financially. It is unlikely that last season changes, but what are the financial challenges of relegation and what will be on the minds of the clubs when pursuing this case is a monetary value.

We don’t know how it is going to pay, but we do know that is likely to play out until October, so, for Leeds, it has to be about the takeover and getting ready for the new season, and we’ll see how this plays on.

It is no surprise to see it dragging out a little longer though, and that is part of the challenge with FFP.”

With Daniel Farke now said to be the leading candidate to take over at Leeds, all eyes are on the new season rather than the last one with these legal implications.

It is months away, so we could see this story emerge again as we reach October, time will tell but compensation packages could be on the table.
