Finance Expert reacts to Leeds United and Barcelona saga over Raphinha

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United will eventually end up receiving the money they are due from Barcelona for the transfer of Raphinha.

It comes after ARA reported on 10 October that the Catalan club still owe the Whites over £50million in the short and long term for the Brazilian winger.

The finance expert admitted that Leeds may need to renegotiate the terms with a longer deadline than what was first agreed upon between the clubs.

“There is the risk, not just Leeds, but any club that has done business with Barcelona over the recent years,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“We’ve seen a number of outstanding payments, and we know that their finances are not great, so there is always a risk in any transfer like this with instalments.

I guess moving forward, despite the fact that the finances are a bit of a mess at Barcelona, the way in which these things work out with football creditors and even if the worst was to happen to Barcelona, those creditors would get paid.

Again, you have got the wider picture of the ability for Barcelona to generate wider revenue in future years, it’s not easy as you’re stacking that against a long-term risk of when you get it, you’re still saying it’s going to be likely you will receive that.

The challenge is, you just don’t know when at the minute, and it may be that it may be a little longer than when you first signed and those terms have to be renegotiated because of the situation.”

In other Leeds United news, our Expert also believes that the Whites could fine one of their players after an incident
