Finance Expert: 49ers takeover unlikely within weeks at Leeds United during World Cup

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that it is highly unlikely that the 49ers Enterprises will complete their full takeover of Leeds United within weeks.

It comes after MOT Leeds News were exclusively told that two options may be in place, the 2024 deadline which everyone knows about, but an earlier one for January 2023.

Finance Expert, Plumley, admitted that it is unlikely that a deal can be completed that quickly, especially with the World Cup in place and Leeds needing to remain in the Premier League as a dealbreaker.

“I think it’s unlikely that it will happen that quick,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“There are a couple of reasons, one is we know that these things take time anyway, even if they’ve been lined up, it’s never something that ends the process quickly. The other thing is we are in the middle of a World Cup and the clubs are on pause a little at the minute and a lot of the players too, so that’s another thing that is a little bump in the road.

“I’d love to see the difference in the two prices, I still think this one hinges on divisional status, more so than anything at the minute. I’m speculating slightly, but I think we may see a hold out for the next deadline in 2024, maybe with one eye on what happens in May.

“I’ve always felt like this deal has a Premier League angle to it, and it needs Leeds to be in there. Leeds are far worth more in the Premier League, but they are more expensive to buy as a Premier League club.

“I think in the next couple of weeks, it is unlikely and there is a lot more that hinges on this.”

It would be huge if the 49ers pulled the trigger this early.

The Times has reported that the American consortium has put their money aside for the £400million move, so if it does depend on Premier League status, this one may take time.
